I’m a teacher of English and I’m a Teacher-Librarian here at Eric Hamber Secondary in Vancouver.  I’ve been teaching since 1995 and for most of my 20+ years in the profession, I was at Prince of Wales (first as a student teacher in 1994-95 and then from 1998-2002 and then again in 2005 to 2019 (in the mini school and in the library) .   From 2002 to 2005, my husband and I taught in China and we traveled throughout China and SE Asia. These three years were memory making for us.   Today we are parents to two kids:  a son who is in grade 8 and a daughter in grade 5.  We live in Vancouver.  I made the big decision to leave PW for Eric Hamber in order to be closer to home and to be in the library/learning commons.

My teaching philosophy centres on lifelong learning and developing a growth mindset in the classroom.  Student-centred classrooms and inquiry based learning are also cornerstones in my teaching.  Finally, incorporating assessment for learning is essential. I’m interested in students being a part of their learning.  Feedback from me is essential with self and peer assessment playing a role in overall learning.  I ask that students keep track of their learning by keeping a folder in the classroom.  An assessment log is a part of the folder and this portion helps them see an overall picture emerging.  Areas of strength and areas of focus are key aspects of reflection on each assessment piece.

I teach English 12 on Day 2 (2.1 and 2.2) in Rm. 321 and I can be found in the library on Day 1 and on Day 2 (2.3/2.4).

My email address is abrett@vsb.bc.ca.
